DR. HIMANTA BISWA SARMA :: HON`BLE CHIEF MINISTER OF ASSAM
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma is an Indian politician and a lawyer. He is serving as the 15th and current Chief Minister of Assam since 2021. He was born on 1 February 1969 in Jorhat, Assam. He is a son of Kailash Nath Sarma and Mrinalini Devi. He married Riniki Bhuyan Sarma in 2001, with whom he has a son, Nandil Biswa Sarma and a daughter, Sukanya Sarma.
He passed his senior secondary examination from Guwahati's Kamrup Academy School in 1985. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1990 and Master of Arts in 1992, both in political science from Cotton College, Guwahati. He was elected the General Secretary of Cotton College Students Union (1991-92). He obtained his LLB degree from Government Law College, Guwahati. He practised law at the Gauhati High Court from 1996 to 2001. In 2006, he completed PhD in political science from Gauhati University. Dr. Sarma is the 7th chief minister of Assam from Cotton University.
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma was a former member of the Indian National Congress, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015. He is a five time Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Jalukbari, having been elected in 2001. He was made a minister of state in the First Tarun Gogoi cabinet twice. He was inducted into the Second Tarun Gogoi cabinet and was upgraded to a cabinet minister. He served in the third cabinet before he resigned from congress. He led the BJP's successful state election campaign in 2016 and was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister on 24 May 2016. The BJP appointed him the convener (leader) of the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), a regional sub-group of the federal National Democratic Alliance (NDA), aimed at increasing the party's political strength in North-East India. He was sworn in as Chief Minister of Assam on 10 May 2021, succeeding Sarbananda Sonowal.
He held several portfolios (both state and cabinet) such as Minister of State for Agriculture, Planning & Development, Finance, Health, Education, and Assam Accord Implementation from 2002 to 2021. Government of India in its various annual reports had singularly pointed out the achievements of the Health and Education departments of Assam. During his tenure, more than 50,000 teachers were appointed for the first time through TET after he abolished the system of interviews.
